fresh install of kubuntu , it said to install nvidia driver , now wont boot?
 

This will be my 4th different distro/DE. I just wanted to learn linux & get away from windows but i cant even get it to an installed working starting point.

Ubuntu 14.04 (could not configure NAS or LAN)
Mint 17.2 KDE (screen tearing on TV hdmi out)
mint 17.2 mate (could not shutdown by any proper means, just reboots whatever)

So iv just installed Kubuntu 15.04, it had a pop-up saying i should install my nvidia drivers so i choose the recommended ones (i think it was 344) it then said to reboot but it wont reboot at all i just get a long internal beep and the monitor shows

my card is a Nvidia GTX 770

I dont see how i could have done anything wrong it was a clean install and i just followed the prompts and recommendations?

k well looks like its a reported bug, I went for the latest distro version as i thought a lot of my previous problems might be cos my comp is pretty new.

iv tried editing the grub to "nomodeset" but that dont work.

If anyone could translate some of the techno jargon for me so i can fix this that would be great.

nearly 9 months of trying linux , getting quite tired now :( but im nothing if not persistent (unlike my linux OS's ^^))

I have that same exact problem with Ubuntu 15.04. I've never been able to solve it but really it doesn't mean that the OS isn't working. If you just wait (it's actually quite a long wait) then the KDE login will show up like normal. So really all you have to do is just wait a bit (it takes about 3 minutes to go to the login screen). So just boot up the computer, go do something else, and when you come back it should be working. :)

tehe, i thought you were jesting when i first read your post but your not ^^ , i could never put up with that if there is no better resolution then it looks like i shall be on to my 5th clean installation of yet another distro or version. I suspect as it was KDE again i would still have had the screen tearing i had with mint kde but i did want to just try.

well unfortunately it didn't work for me i gave it 15 minutes , my monitor goes blank/black/off directly after showing that message and never comes back on. i tried moving mouse, pressing keys etc but nothing :(

o well what should i install next i wonder, be running out of options soon.

Wow I'm sorry to hear that I have that exact same issue but I just have to wait. But why don't you try getting the proprietary driver? That way it should work but it will still have that issue, however, instead of the monitor going blank after a while it will switch over to the login screen. As for he next distro you should try I really don't know. If I were you I'd give Ubuntu another shot and try to install the proprietary driver. But if you don't want to do that then it's all up to you on which distro you want to try next. Also, again, I'm sorry to hear that you're having this much trouble just trying to get a GNU/Linux operating system working on your computer.

But if you're going to move on from Ubuntu then I would suggest trying Arch Linux. Some people say it's hard to set up and stuff like that but there are a lot of Youtube videos, websites, etc out there to help you with that problem. If you're actually going to give Arch Linux a shot then just let me know and I'd be glad to give you some links to some videos on how to install Arch Linux. The reason why I'm saying Arch Linux is that in my past I've had the best luck with Arch Linux with Nvidia.

hi, many thx for your support , i did upgrade to the latest proprietary nvidia driver from the ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa and thats what was running in my last test. I suppose at least it was not a week or 2 into the distro that i found something that i just could not get to work like some of the others , it was a very quick look at kubuntu :)

Thing is iv looked at a lot of different things now and i must say i really like KDE (hence why i tried it again) but im still very confused about a hell of a lot of things.

you got unix , the first layer
then the distro, i kinda see as the second layer
then the DE , 3rd layer
then you really loose me (if im not already) with things like compiz, openGL, GTK2 & 3 and X windows and windows managers etc.

I do like a flashy/slick desktop and i have the power on my main comp so i like to use it which is why i like KDE but i did manage to get mint mate to look pretty good with compiz+cairo+emerald+conky but then found an unsolved problem with mint mate.

im wondering will compiz run on a KDE DE ? if it can would it fix the tearing problem that iv always got with KDE(is it the DE or the compositing manager that handles video, moving windows etc)?

This has been a very steep leaning curve and im still at the bottom looking up the mountain scratching my head ^^

p.s. i did briefly look at arch but i think it blew me away with techno babble questions before it was even installed i think i quickly moved on.

I am not really familiar with Compiz although I just read a bit about it. Otherwise there isn't much I know about it and I have absolutely no idea that it will solve your problems. However, what I am quite certain is that the desktop environment shouldn't dictate whether this will work or not. From what I know the DE shouldn't be a factor when thinking if something will work or not. Even tools specific to one DE (GNOME, XFCE, etc) can be run on other distros with other DEs. But at the same time I myself am kind of new to GNU/Linux so I could be wrong.

Overall I think it should work on KDE like it would work on any other DE.
