Question Freezing the system. Packages error. sudo dpkg --configure -a

Hi!
I need your advise, guys!
First of all I am running Ubuntu 9.4 on my laptop (Toshiba). Everything is working fine, even NVidia original driver, huh.
But I have faced the problem, while trying to load system update with russian language at one moment everything on the screen was freezed. After rebooting - works fine, but when I run AddRemove Application it says:

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

Well, ok, when I go to terminal (even using root) and run "sudo dpkg --configure -a" everything is freezing again.

Well, I have reinstalled Ubuntu, with only english interface language, got updates - OK, then I have tried to install Open Office and some other progs. Same story.

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

I can live without OpenOffice, but please let me know how I can cut the line of packages for installation, since I am not sure it would not repeat in the future.

And in fact, I can not install anything else! After commands like

sudo apt-get install rpm

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
stas@ubuntu:~$

Once again, everything is freezing after manual sudo dpkg.

Thanks, have a great day!

I'm not sure why the E: is showing in your output?
Are you running Ubuntu from windows or a wubi install?

Also have you tried to update the repositories? Unless you have a fast connection i.e. adsl or broadband, this can take a while to run and I am wondering if somehow the package database has got corrupted in your case.
