freezes in linux mint 17 and 17.1

I have filed/followed bug reports on this at the linux mint site -- any one here have any suggestions?Running cinnamon 64 bit and occaisionally the system will freeze up requiring a hard reset-- core 2 duo 3 Ghz with 8 Gigs of ram using onboard graphics -- from the bug reports I have read it occurs across a wide spectrum of hardware and while Nvidia users seem to see it most often it is not an Nvidia only -- bug backports report buntu and it's dirivitives see it too -- frustrating as I really like Mint other wise

Other distros running fine? it can be also a hardware overheating problem that you can test with one of crowd computing projects preferably folding@home.

no problem with debian -- any buntu users see this?

It might be a good idea to run a memory test.
If that works, try converting a video file from one format to another (a highly CPU intensive task).

You know. Mint has

Code:

htop
to show what the last process was before the freeze. F6 sort by in htop will be your friend in this.

My Mint 17 Mate does not freeze, ever, on my Samsung RV510 Laptop.
I do not run Cinnamon out of personal preference on my part.

You can't run htop if the machine is literally frozen.

You open a terminal and run htop and leave it open till it freezes. Then look in htop at last running process. Unless you have a better idea like looking in /var/dmesg or whatever.

So, what would you suggest?

JeremyBoden 12-11-2014 08:03 PM

You may find a clue near the end of /var/dmesg, especially if it is hardware-ish related.
If the machine keeps writing to dmesg, it isn't frozen.

Of course, perhaps it froze before any info could be written to any log...

Can you identify the freezes with any particular type of activity?
e.g. Heavy video, heavy CPU, high I/O etc...
Do you use any of the temperature monitoring facilities?

knuckle 12-12-2014 05:59 AM

the freezes are completely random and do not seem to be hardware related.I believe it to be a problem with the "trusty" base as I have read reports of similar freezes for buntu users using both gnome and unity.I have seen them while using firefox, chrome and just playing aisle riot.Once the freeze occurs both mouse and keyboard do not respond.I have seen the same freeze on my old P4 rig too.Mint acknowledges the bug but as yet it has been unassigned -- hopefully they will squash it shortly but I thought perhaps someone here had figured it out by now.

Hi gor0,

no fud here check the link https://bugs.launchpad.net/linuxmint/+bug/1321623 -- I see you list Mint first as your distrobution of choice -- might I ask 64 bit or 32 and which desktop?

eerok 12-13-2014 07:52 AM

I've been using Mint 17 since it came out, and I recently installed a fresh 17.1 (Cinnamon). I don't like Gnome in general (I prefer Xfce or Fluxbox), but I tried Cinnamon for a few days out of curiosity. It bogged down on me a few times, which means it froze for up to a full minute or so without actually crashing. I have a 3.5GHz quad-core CPU with 16GB RAM and a modest but solid Nvidia card, and I'd say that Cinnamon is a bit buggy.

If I were the OP, I'd install Xfce or even KDE and see what happens. It's quite trivial to keep more than one DE/WM on a distro, and it often allows you to determine if a problem is hardware- or software-related.

64,cinnamon...

well for what it is worth Mint pushed quite a few updates on the 13th and "knock on wood" no freezes since.I was going to switch to Xfce when it ofiicially came out for 17.1 but these last two days have been nice... if they finally squashed this bug I think I will stick with cinnamon for a while
