Freeze on boot (clean install SuSE 9.1)
 

I have a computer (great deduction, lol):

Gigabyte GA-6XBE Motherboard
Pentium 3 600Mhz
128MB
20 GB Western Digital Hard Drive
nVidia 32Mb Geforce
No Sound Card
Asound Network Card (configured by linux as module "fealnx")

Ok. Here is my problem. When I start up my computer, it goes through the boot loader and the initial system setup, then it freezes just before it gets to the desktop. I did this on a fresh install, perfectly formated harddrive.
I have this same problem with windows XP (on the same computer), but it's a tad different, windows shows me a pretty blue screen just before the boot screen.

I've tried formatting the hard drive (using the "write 0's" to the whole drive method), swaping video cards, taking out the sound card, new memory (took out the old). I'm really at a loss here, and the computer is just sitting here collecting dust (which, if you're wondering, I've cleaned out to improve cooling, in case that was a problem, and that didn't help at all). I have tried to figure out how to flash the BIOS in case somehow there is a virus on there, but I haven't had much luck (I can't figure out how, because it's almost impossible to create a DOS boot disk with linux, or at least I don't know how. Then from there, I don't know how to do it either. So I'm kind of stuck).

My only guess would be a bad motherboard since that is the only thing that you didn't swap out... besides the CPU. But since it does this to you for both OS I don't think Linux is the culprit ... it's obviously the hardware.

You've tried everything else, and as Corona said, it's obviously not the software. If you have another computer laying around, put the CPU in question into the other one... same results? Bingo...

ok, thanks for your tips. I'll see what happens. I don't happen to have just a bunch of hardware lying around that I can throw in at the moment. I was thinking Motherboard anyways.

Does it change your mind if I say this happens to two (both, all) computers I own. One (listed above) about 5 years old, and another that's barely a year.
