freeing up space without affecting the OS
 

Hello,

I got Fedora9 installed on my 20G hard drive and now wish to install Ubuntu as well.During the fedora install process,i selected the auto partition option which uses the entire disk.Now how do i free up space(preferably 10G) from the 20G hard drive without affective the fedora OS.Will the fdisk utility work?

I assume that you have at least 10 GB free on the Fedora partition already?

You definitely don't want to use fdisk, that will just ruin your install. The safest course of action would be to use a live CD that contains Parted (like System Rescue CD), boot to that, and then resize/create the partitions accordingly.

Many Thanks.I have another 20GB hard drive as well.Would i be able to install ubuntu on that one and set the system as dual boot?I guess it should be possible but i got no clue as to how to go about it.....

Having to distinct hard disks for each operating is the optimal solution, so go for that.

Install Ubuntu on the other drive, but avoid during installation to overwrite the GRUB boot options, unless the installer detects the Fedora system and offers to include in the new GRUB setup for booting. The boot settings should have both Fedora and Ubuntu in the end.

Read some GRUB documentation for tampering with the boot settings by hand.
