Free Partitioning Software?
 

Partition magic isn't free?? Didn't know that.. are they any are free?

Partition magic's evaluation period won't let you actually partition squat.. you have to buy it.

Any suggestions?

Or gparted.sf.net for the above app in Gtk flavour. I've also heard that Qtparted is no longer being maintained but I can't remember what I got that from so it might not be true.

Unless of course you happen to be "exotic" matter - in which case the law has just been repealed.People get *paid* for thinking this stuff up.

Ok, how do I use and where do I find Fdisk? Syro, don't forget you're dealing with a newbie here... go easy. ;)

I downloaded the 4 ISO's for Fedora Core on cd and tried to follow the steps to partition found here: FC
I get to the boot screen, type in 'linux rescue' and then the system hangs shortly after. It doesn't revive and I have to ctrl-alt-del to reboot. Any suggestions? note: I have XP taking up 57GB's presently, which I obviously wish to resize.

I really don't want to pay for partition magic.. however, after downloading it and evaluating iit, it seems so easy.

So I downloaded FDisk and extracted it. It's not clear what to do next, even in the install file. Do I copy it to a disk, make an image and boot that? or do I bring it to DevC++ and compile it? or ?

Sorry, I was being facetious. fdisk is *the* partitioning tool for Linux.
It's generally shipped on every distro - particularly the mega-distros like FC.

*real* good at (re)partitioning, but you lose all your data
For re-sizing, you'll want something different.

With the XP partition, are we to assume this is NTFS ???. If so, I don't believe parted will handle it.
Have a look at something like ntfsresize. Have a look around - especially the FAQ. Looks like warty should have it already if you want to do it from your current install.

Note that the website is unmaintained, but the software is (apparently) still good.

BACK UP ALL YOUR DATA BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANYTHING

instead i would recommend that download the Ultimate boot CD
smaller version around 60 MB

Hi, I installed Ubuntu in a dual boot with Windows XP using the Ubuntu install CD (Hoary), it was a bit frightening to begin the installation but....it does eventually allow you to partition during the install process. The point is that a partitioning tool comes included with the install CD, Have you got the CD from Shipit?...if so just follow the screen prompts......but back up first!...just to be on the safe side ok? I finally partitioned it using the tools SYG offered, NTFSresize. Wow that was easy.... and FUN!! Feel like a big weight has been lifted.. been trying to partition for like four days now. :D Everything was a success and all data is intact, I always backup anyways... Thanks for your patience.

Got my first glimpse of Tux while partitioning.. he certainly grows on ya. ;)
