Frame buffer
I found a few HOW-TO's but nothing about it's general information. Reason I ask is because i was told framebuffer was an alternative to using X11 for a project im working on.
Is frame buffer for TV out and X11 for SVGA? I confused |
frame buffer is also an alternative for X11 to use if it cannot utilize your video card directly (I think). Are you looking to setup TV out or tv on your pc type thing?

I wil be using the monitor and I have a Matrox Mytique 220 business. I've been told that mplayer has Matrox (MGA) compile options for optimizing for this type of video card. .... I will be using mplayer.
perhaps X11 is better? as you've stated the opposite, so i assume x11 utilizing my vid card directly. Thank you for your reply. |
whoa... hold on... that's a slightly different thing there... now I'm not familiar with the matrox line of cards... does Linux / XF86 support the card... does it provide DRI / AGP? If so then have mplayer utilize matrox extensions... it might help. I have a laptop with a rage128 mobil (which SUCKS!!) and is not supported by pretty much anyone. So I have to use the framebuffer support in XF86 and then Mplayer uses the X11 video for output (I think). And every once in a while it will have to drop frames and what not because the output can't handle the framerate...
just a word of warning... course you could always compile it; then through the config file use one output plugin then the other and see which works best for you. |
I will add support for both X11 and Framebuffer but I'll have to figure out HOW they both work. :)
X11 and Framebuffer are branched off of Xfree86? that is to say Xfree86 loads then loads either X11 or Framebuffer? I thought X11 _was_ Xfree86 :-\ |
framebuffers have nothign in common with X, different ballgame altogether. X11 is the standard desiplay method of the XFree86 windowing system.
