Unhappy Format floppy: Device or resource busy. (What?)

Sorry to keep coming back. This is not easy for me as a total newbie.

Slackware Linux...

OK, I’m trying to do the basics here. I am trying to format a floppy disk.

Mount /dev/fd0

[Slackware seemed to like that.]

fdformat /dev/fd0

[returns]

ioctl(FDFMTTRH) Device or resource busy

But I haven’t run anything yet! All documentation says this should work.
I have mounted floppy in KDE and created a folder on it so the HW is not the problem.
Yes, I do want to run a floppy disk drive on this machine. I also want to understand what’s going on.

Can anyone help? Currently my PC is deaf and dumb to the outside world right now.

“It’s like trying to build ships out of whipped cream.” (Attack of the killer tomatoes.) Oh yeah, Linux is definitely a server OS. I’m getting that now.

Learnt how to shutdown safely today mind you. After lots of fsck... Lots to learn.

Don't mount the device before you format it. You are trying to format the raw device /dev/fd0, but when you mount it first it becomes busy and unavailable to the format.

do:

Code:
umount /dev/fd0
then format it.

Thanks for your patience guys.

Floppy disk formatting now!

So that's floppy disk formatting covered, shutdown of PC covered, switching of GUI's covered, repair of file system...

Not too bad. Plus starting on learning Indonesian today.

Time out tomorrow.

Terima Kasih (Thank you.)

I'll be back quite a bit until I break the first few steps.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Slackware.

Once you Slack, you'll never go back.

All joking aside, I started with Slack and it is still my favorite. Once you are at home in Slackware, no other distro can intimidate you.

There is a good Linux primer at about dot com, though it is Ubuntu-oriented.

Machtelt Garrels has written a fantastic in-depth intro. I have a printed copy of that on my bookshelf and have read it all the way through.

I also recommend the Slackbook. It helped me so much that I bought a copy.
