Boot from a Linux DVD and use gparted to view (but not change) your disks and the partitions on each one.

Even though the following guide is for dual booting it goes through the steps of a manual set up which is necessary for what you want to accomplish. It would be nice to know exactly how the drive is partitioned.

Typical linux installations have more then one partition but it isn't absolutely necessary. If you have free space in your other partitions you can shrink them to create space for additional linux partitions. Always back up any important data since this can be a bit scary if you have never done this before.
