Font compatibility
 

Hi,
I have unintentionally wiped Windows 7 from my computer and since then decided to dual-boot with Linux Mint Julia and openArtist. No problem there and I don't miss Windows itself but there were a couple of Fonts I had on windows that aren't installed via Linux.What I want to know is, if I download these windows fonts can I use them in Abiword, Scribus,etc or do I have to use another program to alter them for usability.?The fonts I want aren't cheap so I would appreciate advice in advance.

Hi

Make a directory named .fonts in your home directory, then put your font files in it. You might have to select "show hidden" or similar in your file browser, because files and directories starting with a . are normally hidden. If you want them for all users, you can read this guide:

The first thing to know is, which is the format of these fonts?

Linux supports the vast majority of font formats, but we can't be sure if they will be supported if we don't know which kind of fonts you will be using.

I can anticipate that you will have no problem if the fonts are in type1 or ttf format. Many more are supported. The quality of the hinting and how they are displayed will depend greatly on many factors. I talked a bit about that in other thread, in case you are interested.
