Folders Default to Nautilus
 

I accidentally changed the default for my folders.

everytime i try to open a folder on my desktop it runs mplayer. how do i get rid of this or set it back to open Nautilus?

Does it work right if you run nautilus manually then open folders from within it (as opposed to opening them from your desktop)?

yes, it works fine that way.

what happened was...I right clicked the desktop icon for my DVD ROM and went to

Open With ... > Other Application

and chose to open with gmplayer because I wanted my DVDs to run with gmplayer. Unfortunately this change the default for all the other desktop icons. So my Home folder, Trash, and Start Here all open using gmplayer, which doesn't really work. How do I get rid of the "Other Application"?

Argh, yes. The gnome file associations system is known to be seriously sucky. It's on the top priority list for things to fix.

I've tried and can't actually dupe this behaviour, but I'm using a later verison of gnome than you. Try this:

right click on the dvd rom icon (in fact any should work) and choose Open With -> Other Application. You should see a box come up with a list of apps, probably gmplayer and nautilus, one will say default, one will say in menu? I'm guessing here totally.

What you want to do is change the default back to nautilus (or put it back in if it's gone)

i've tried looking for that default and couldn't find it. I tried typing in the nautilus command to open the root folder, now there is a list of "open with ..." applications (i.e. root, nautilus, gmplayer) and my trash and start here icons open root only.

I don't have any apps on my list at all. Not sure what's happened here. Does anybody else have any ideas?

If not hunt me down on freenode.net sometime (nick: TD in #linuxhelp) and we can go through this step by step. Not this weekend though, i'm out of the country. I can't really visualise what you're seeing i'm afraid. Worst comes to worst you can launch somebody an xterm and they can try and sort it out remotely.

Find an irc client, one will almost certainly come with your distro - xchat is a good one.

Start it, choose a nick, then type:

/server irc.freenode.net
(wait while it connects)
/join #linuxhelp

and say hi. If somebody knows the answer, they will say so and you can start getting support. Wait a bit after stating the problem, it can sometimes take several minutes and perhaps a couple of repeats before somebody who knows will notice.

Otherwise you might want to post to gnomesupport.org

thanks for all the help...i figured out xchat. but unfortunately that didn't help. so i went to gnomesupport.org like you suggested.
