Folder protection in ubuntu-gnome
Hello guys.
What is the best way to secure folder in Ubuntu? I would like it to ask for password every time someone tries to open it. Creating another user is not an option for me. Do i need some external program or the system has it covered? Thanks in advance! :) |
Hi,
If you can not create another user then who are you afraid might try to open your files? I would suggest using folder permissions. I would suggest just changing the permissions on the folder or files so they are only readable by the owner. Then they would be password protected in a sense because the owner would have to login to the ubuntu box with a password or have the ability to su up to root in order to read the files, su-ing up to root would also require a password. |
Thanks for the fast reply nitrohuffer2001 !
I gave it a thought and now i think it's a good idea to make another user beside the root one. Best regards. |
I hope you aren't using root as a user?

Actually I am... I'm really new to this.

I would suggest (if possible) that, on the grounds of simplicity that you reinstall Ubuntu.
When you are asked to give a user name, do so and give it a reasonable password. This user will have normal abilities for user purposes and should be used for your logon. If you use the sudo command you will be able to perform root level admin functions with it. Ubuntu doesn't have a password for the root user. In the unlikely situation that you need to logon as root there are methods to give it a password. But try to avoid the temptation to do this. :) Don't use root. |
Thanks! I really need advices like this.
Will do ASAP. |
