fluxbox newbie
 

Hi,
I know I'm probably asking for a lot of someone's time, but could someone give me some step by step help on how to make my fluxbox desktop look something like this:

I've been doing a lot of research before posting here but nothing gives me a clear answer on if it's even possible to do this with fluxbox. I could probably acomplish something like this with kde but i wanted something faster that didn't crash.

Fluxbox is very confusing, I couldn't create icons untill I downloaded the file manager rox and enabled pinboard. Now im guessing I can't get that cool transparent "karamba" with rox pinboard can I?

well d00d every single thing you can see in that screenshot is all karamba ...
the weather theme, taskbar, and a cpu monitor ..
all of which them themes are readily avaliable at kde-look.org and yes you
can use this and do this in fluxbox ... oh and you also have the option of FbDesk for adding icons to your flux
desktop ...

I tried to download thos karamba themes and it seems i need a program called "super karamba" and from what the website says it is only for KDE.

As for FBdesk i got that installed and created a few icons, but the whole program seems half assed to me. Im looking for more eye candy stuff.

And you're saying i can get that karamba stuff working in Fluxbox alone? or do i have to run like kde in the backround or something. I mean as of now i can't even create a wallpaper without using the file manager ROX

Um, I have a n00b question. For some reason all the fonts look really bad and hard to read. Is there some adjustment i have to make with anitaliasing or resolution?

Check out gdesklets. They're similar to karamba applets and they run fine in fluxbox.

now when you say they run fine in fluxbox, do you mean you have to have gnome running in the backround? Cause with Fluxbox i can't get even get a backround image without using ROX's pinboard or running kde etc. I really know nothing when it comes to customising a fluxbox desktop, I've been spending a lot of time at Fluxmod.org and other various websites but finding answers to "obvious quesions" is hard

i use fluxbox exclusively...the way i understand it, and i may be wrong, but i think applications only use the libraries from either kde or gnome...so kde and gnome aren't running in the background...the applications just access the libraries...

in /home/yourname/.fluxbox there is an init file that you can modify to change things like the background, for instance if you have a picture you want to set as background on fluxbox, you would edit the line :

session.screen0.rootCommand:

and add "fbsetbg -f path to your picture, such as /home/jay/jay.jpg

so it would read:
session.screen0.rootCommand: fbsetbg -f /home/jay/jay.jpg

and when you restart fluxbox, the image should come up as your background.

you can get more info about this in the man page for fluxbox..

as for your running applications, look at it like this. if you run kde and start for example the galeon webbrowser, which is part of gnome, you're only starting galeon, not gnome. same thing when you run applications in fluxbox. you're only starting the application, not the entire desktop environment.

it's pretty easy, once you've done it once or twice lol...

I'd second the suggestion for gDesklets. Superkaramba works in Fluxbox, but I never did figure out how to get transparency to work with the applications. Everything had a black box around it. With gDesklets, transparency worked right out of the box.
