First Time Linux... Which Version?
 

k, I just want to download a linux.... but I dont know which one...
could u please tell me which version should I download and could u give me a link for downloading Linux?

I've been using Linux for about a year and a half now. I've gone though about 30 different Distros. I'm currently using PCLinux 2007. Easy and powerfull. I did use Kubuntu for a long time, but I like PCLinux better. And I find that Kubuntu does not run well as a LiveCD (Very Slow). PCLinux runs great off the CD. This way you can try it before you install it.

Kubuntu is a good choice.

and Ive decided to install either ubuntu or kubuntu.... but I cant find whats the difference.

They run different Desktop environments (the GUI). Ubuntu uses Gnome, Kubuntu uses KDE, i've tried both briefly and couldn't find much difference apart from that.

It should be noted that Ubuntu can run fine with KDE and vice versa....

Since you're just starting out i'd checkout the support for each, which will be invaluable (should you not find your answers here....... which could happen i guess, maybe ;) )

If you want to install Linux then you will have to create a seperate partition for Linux. Since you are new to linux I prefer you try one of the liveCDs.

I prefer you try Knoppix liveCD as it seems Kubuntu does not offer a live CD, it also comes with choice of both Gnome and KDE Desktop enhancements.
I recommend any one or more of these live CDs - Knoppix, Ubuntu, Suse Live, PCLinux,Mandriva One.
Also you can try Morphix and Knoppix clones for special purposes.

It's been more than 2 months since I started trying out different linux distro. I have tried fedora, ubuntu, kubuntu, pclinuxos, and simplymepis. Of all the distros that I tried, simplymepis was my choice. It worked well with all my hardware, (except the dell printer). My next choice is pclinuxos. If you will be running a webserver, I will recommend fedora...

As mentioned, the differences are almost entirely cosmetic. I personally hate KDE, but its quite popular for some reason. Some say KDE is more resource heavy than Gnome, and while I think there is some validity to that, if you're running a reasonably fast PC, you probably won't notice much difference.

I agree with 'Indy' kudos to 'pixellany' for the response. While I had some limited help when I started delving into Linux, it was reading all kinds of different docs and how to's that really helped.
