Firewall
 

Am using Mint 11 which includes a firewall,( I think it's GUFW) however I have to scroll through the menu to open it and then turn it on each time I fire up the computer.
Is there any way that I can set it up so it's active as soon as I log on or alternatively is there any way i get get it to appear on my desktop at login ?

GUFW is a frontend for iptables, which is built in to Linux.

Once it configures iptables to your liking, you do not have to run the GUFW application unless you want to change a setting.
