Firefox upgrade for Acer Aspire One, Help!
 

I just bought an Acer Aspire One which runs Linux Lite. I've tried upgrading Firefox 2 to the new Firefox 3 but fail. Would some one pls teach me how to upgrade it?

Generally speaking, you do not upgrade programs, unless the files are supplied by the distro. Then there will be a package to 'upgrade' the original files. These are tested against the original installed files by the distro suppliers.

Next, you can get to the next release, by removing the original, downloading the next version and installing the next version.

To remove the original files, you become the root user, and delete the directory where the files are installed. This can be dangerous for a new user. You need to understand the commands, or gui tools you are using; FIRST.

I usually get the new version from the Mozilla site. I'm running 3.0, the download is an archive, and is untarred in the correct location. Then you will need any plugins such as Java. I get the latest from Sun's download site. They have instructions on the site for install. You will want the Flash plugin as well. Similar to the Java install.

I do all the installing as root, ans as mentioned above, it can be dangerous if you do not know what you are doing.

You will find most distros do release some type of an update, but they lag the release, often by several months.

You do not have to install FF as root user, if your system has only one user that will use the new version. If you install FF as a user, the files will go to your /home/username directory. Understand only your user will be able to use FF, if this is the way you do it. It is safer, in that there is no risk to the system files. You do not have to remove the original. You would have to make a sim link to Java, assuming it was installed for the original.

Think about how you want to install it, post your questions, being as specific as possible. Have a look for the install instructions on each site. To know what plugins are installed now, on the location line in FF type 'about:plugins' ( without the quotes ) and you will get a list of installed plugins. To make the new version work in a similar fashion, you will need the plugins.

Hope this gets you going in the right direction.

I downloaded the latest version of firefox as hinted in the manual, but when i attempted to install it i got a message saying a newer version is already installed. Which is incorrect as far as i'm aware as the aspire one comes with v2 of firefox.

So I had a bright idea and thought... I know i'll uninstall firefox v2 then install v3. Only problem was after I uninstalled firefox i lost the GUI (well the desktop anyway). I managed to get firefox v3 installed which works fine now but still no desktop.

Does anyone have any ideas where i went wrong? Or how to get this back without using the recovery CD? (I'm thinking uninstall firefox v3 and install v2 but I dont know how to call the add/remove programs from the filemanager)

What distro?

How did you go about installing Firefox?

How did you remove ( uninstall the old version ) of Firefox?

What desktop are you running? KDE Gnome? Xfce?

For now, leave the recovery CD alone.

Its an Acer AspireOne. Not 100% sure what distro it uses, Fedora7 I think but Acer may have cut it down.

The desktop is xfce, I had to enable the advanced desktop using xfce-setting-show so I could access the add/remove programs. It was from within package manager I removed firefox.

After a reboot I lost the desktop, although I still have the taskbar and search so can search for commands and run them.

I downloaded the rpm file for firefox v3 from rpm.pbone.net... copied it onto usb and installed it by executing the file. It installed ok and now I can run firefox 3 but just cant get the desktop back.

One observation not sure if i'm onto something... The v2 rpm file is bigger than the v3. Maybe i've got the wrong v3 rpm.

firefox-3.0.1-1.fc7.remi.i386.rpm = 9MB
firefox-2.0.0.14-1.fc7.i386.rpm = 21MB
