Firefox updates for Ubuntu 10.04
 

Hi, I am using Ubuntu 10.04 with Firefox browser (version: Firefox 20.0 Mozilla Firefox for Ubuntu canonical -1.0).
I have read that later versions of Ubuntu will update Firefox automatically, but apparently this does not happen on 10.04.
Recently when I go on Google Mail the Contacts stopped working and the following message appears along the top:
"This version of Firefox is no longer supported. Please upgrade to a supported browser"
I followed the links to update, and have downloaded "Firefox-33.0.tar.bz2", which is currently in my Downloads, but what do I have to do next to install this update? I also use the Firefox Scrapbook add on and have several folders which I would like to retain if possible, would these have to be saved (how?) or would they just transfer into the updated version automatically?
As my computer skills are minimal, I would very much appreciate simple step by step instructions. Many thanks.

Ubuntu 10.04 on the desktop was only supported until May 2013, this is why you don't get any updates for desktop software like Firefox. I strongly recommend to upgrade your OS to either 12.04 or 14.04.

My Zorin OS (Ubuntu under the bonnet) only lists Firefox 26 as the latest update version.. However my Google mail account keeps saying the Firefox browser is unsupported and the Adobe Flash reader is too old to be safe..

I try the Mozilla Firefox update site and can only download a windows tar file which will not install.

I also have a lot of browser bookmarks which I want to preserve..?

What is my best option?

Thank you TobiSGD for such a quick reply. I have delayed upgrading my OS for fear of messing up my computer and having nobody to turn to for help. The friend who installed Ubuntu 10.04 for me over 4 years ago is no longer around to advise, and although I am quite prepared to have a go, unfortunately my computer skills are minimal. However I believe you are right and the time has come to upgrade, so:
1) I noticed that Update Manager has a button to upgrade to 12.04.5 LTS, please could you advise step by step what I need to do after I click the Upgrade button?
2) Also, do I need to back anything up first, and if so, what do I need to do to achieve this? (I've never backed anything up before)
3) Finally, you mention that Ubuntu 14.04 is now available, from what I have read on line I must upgrade to 12.04 first, but should I then upgrade again to the latest version?
I understand that these are very basic questions, but when I have hit problems in the past I found everybody knows someone who can sort out Windows, but most have never even heard of Linux, which is why I fear that I will lose the use of my computer if through lack of technical knowledge I make a simple mistake.

I would suggest you read through the information at the Ubuntu site below which explains in about as much detail as you can get. 12.04 will be supported until April, 2017 so you won't need to upgrade to 14.04 although you can if you want. I would suggest that you check the minimum hardware requirements for 14.04 before doing so especially if you have an older computer. Back up any personal data that is important to you to some external medium, another hard drive, flash drives or DVDs.

Many thanks to all who responded, it's taken me a while, but I've now upgraded to 12.04 first, and then today on to 14.04 LTS, both from the Update Manager "Upgrade" button, and both times have worked perfectly, now all problems are resolved.

This has given me the confidence to upgrade to new versions in the future, so once again, thank you for your help.
