firefox slower in linux
 

hi guys .after using linux and windows for browsing,i feel firefox in linux is much slower.is it true???any methods to make it faster??

It really depends on what your using Linux for. Are you running it on old hardware? Are you running server daemons on a desktop computer? etc..

Try looking at what is running on your box and kill the unneeded processes. This should help speed things up.

Firefox performs worse in linux, it's a fact. Specially when there's a fixed background below a floated page. Today, I answered a similar thread in the Gentoo forums, in case you want to take a look (it's not a long thread).

One thing I've noticed is that - on some distros - firefox 3 comes with dozens of language packs pre-installed. If you remove the ones that you do not need, it should run faster. That is, providing you have one of the affected distros (Fedora comes to mind).
Still, it does have issues with certain sites. This seems to suggest that something does not cope very well with specific types of code.

That will only take some MBs on your hard disk. When a program loads, only the needed files are read, and the language files that are needed are located using the info of LANG and/or LC_* variables depending on the program. Some others use specific configuration.

Having more of less language files installed will not have any effect. They are not plugins that are always running in the background.

May sound stupid but when i disabled font anti-aliasing in KDE configuration menu it became bit more responive. Try $top in console and see what uses the most CPU power.

I "accidentally" found out a few days ago that Firefox under Linux is slower with some sites than it is on other operating systems (actually it's not just the browser itself, for example Epiphany is affected); for example if there are divs that contain scrollbars, it's likely that Firefox on Linux scrolls the pages/div contents very slowly (scroll a few lines, sleep almost a second, scroll a few more lines, sleep again, ...that sort of "speed") whereas on other operating systems the scroll speed is just normal. I haven't found a definitive reason, but a lot of people seem to think that it's because of some library Firefox uses under Linux (this would sound sane because the problem does not occur on Windows for example). The problem doesn't come up on all sites (this far I've only found one), but when it does, it sure is annoying :) Hope they'll fix the problem soon..it's just that it seems to have been around for quite a while, I'm not sure at all if the folks "responsible" even know about this; if they did, they probably had fixed it already..

In the mean time I use Opera for the site(s, if more appear) that doesn't work with Firefox.

Wait for a little while... Google's Chrome for linux is on the way ;)

There's a good number of "alternate" browsers for you to choose from, so go ahead. Just search for "web browser" and you'll see..besides Mozilla products Opera is one "big", Safari on the other hand isn't available for Linux as far as I know. And yes, Google's "Chrome" may be available for Linux one day (not today).

It, usually, is faster. But there's much more to a browser than just speed. Just try it and see if it fits you or not.

I think the problem is flash. The flashplayer for linux isn't what it should be; Adobe seems to give it a low priority.

I have noticed the slowness that others here complain about, and I have been trying for awhile to track it down, and I think it is flash. It seems to be a much bigger problem when I have any firefox window open that has a flash component, even if I block the flash from running (which I usually do).

There may be some other factor at work too, perhaps associated with KDE, because I noticed a lot more trouble after I upgraded to KDE 3.5.9 from 3.5.7.

Flash in linux is problematic in every browser. But firefox has some serious performance issues that are not related to flash. Read my first post above and follow the link to see a demonstration about a non-flash related problem.

And, Adobe does not "seem to give it a low priority". The correct phrase would be "Adobe indeed gives it a low priority" :p We only have a crappy port for x86-linux. The rest of platforms are completely unsupported.

Yeah, it looks like you may have made your case. Or at least, this particular case is one in which the problem occurs.

You should report it to the developers as a bug.
