Firefox, How to display TIFF images?

Ubuntu 8.04

I am using Firefox version 3, and it can not display TIFF images? Isn't image displaying built into the Firefox web browser? When I used to use IE, it had no problem displaying images including TIFF images.

After a google search, I found some plugin that was supposed to work but I am running x86_64 and the plugin does not support that.

What can I do? Why doesn't Firefox support TIFF image displaying?

I've never tried to view TIFF images in Firefox, but if it doesn't support it, I would imagine it would be for licensing reasons. But since I am not familiar with the licensing terms Adobe is using for TIFF, I don't know for sure. According to Wikipedia, there are some security concerns regarding TIFF, maybe that has something to do with it also. I'm curious as to the reason for the lack of support too.

Tiff Plugin
http://tiff-plugin.sourceforge.net/

If your using debian or ubuntu you can do apt-get install libtiff-tools

I visited that plugin's SF homepage, hoping the author might provide an explanation as to why TIFF isn't supported by Firefox out-of-the-box, but no luck. I'm starting to think Mozilla just figures that since TIFF isn't useful for Web browsing, they rather just let third-parties deal with it.

tried that, it did not work!

This is what I found with the google search, and it does not work on my system, which is x86_64. If you go to the "download now" link, then you see that it has i386 and amd64. I tried the amd64, but it does not work.

I also tried to download and build it. It complains of unknown architecture, x86_64. Then, I tried to --force it and it built, but did not work.

Hi newtovanilla,

I've got Firefox 3.0.5 running on Ubuntu 8.04, and the following worked for me:

1. Download the Debian package (here's the link I used)
http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/d...lugin-i386.deb
2. Install it (I just double-clicked it, and the firefox add-on wizard took over).
3. Open a shell and type:
sudo cp /usr/lib/mozilla-tiff-plugin/mozilla-tiff-plugin.so /home/~YOUR~USERNAME~HERE~/.mozilla/plugins/
(edit the above command to include your own username, and remember it's case-sensitive)
4. Restart Firefox, then try to view a TIFF file. It should work.

Hope this does the trick for you,

im on Debian and looked at iceweasels application tab..and it shows tiff associated with mozplugger plugin...I tested tiff with this page
http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/testpages/tiff.html
It shows for me..maybe mozplugger will work for you

With mozplugger you also need the imagemagick package to display tiffs.
Logout and in again for it to work.
