firefox crashing
 

Hello everyone...my web browser the one that came with Linux Mint Julia 10 keeps crashing...screen flashes and reboots flicking...all sorts of funny things..now forced to use Micro $$$....any help would be appreciated..

Is Firefox the only thing that crashes? Or dos the entire system crash with it?
Are you able to run Mint 10 and Firefox from the live CD ok without any crashes?
What graphics card are you using?

Hi thanks for reply...yes every thing just stops..I not have live version or optical drive..netbook...installed by USB...first time this happen..not downloaded anything except updates for Mint...that pop up evry so often.

So the systtem ran ok previously? And this problem just recently developed? Is that right?

Does the system run ok without launching Firefox? Can you listen to music, watch videos, read files, etc, without the system crashing?
If the system runs ok for a while without launching Firefox, and freezes after launching Firefox, then I would try disabling all Firefox addons and flash and see it that prevents the crashes.

Does the computer run ok without crashes while using Windows?

I understand what you are saying..I will turn on and try without Firefox and report back.
I installed Mint 10 three weeks ago ...not one problem at all with insulation or since until today.....
Firefox jumps around and logs out ....I think that is called crashing or freezing..

See if the system will run ok without launching Firefox. If it still crashes or freezes without launching Firefox, then I would run memtest for at least a few hours to try to rule out a hardware problem as the source of your difficulties. You should have memtest available from the Mint grub menu.
If you do not see the grub menu when you boot the computer, hold down the shift key as the computer boots and you should see the grub menu. Choose memtest and let that run for a while and see if it reports errors.

If the system runs ok without Firefox, then disable all addons and flash from Firefox and see if that helps.

I went and turned on Netbook and looked at a few things for awhile..then went into Firefox.after 30 seconds it opoend and closed 137 times...it rebooted and went crazy again...
If it was in windows I would say it has Virus....I not look at any site except work related
AND NOT DOWNLOAD ANYTHING....

If this is unstable meaning Linux Mint Julia 10 LXDE....what else installs like Mint 10..

Well, that seems unusual indeed. You mean Firefox launched and crashed 137 times??
Can you at least try disabling all addons and flash from Firefox and see if that helps?

Also, try running Firefox from the terminal. (Just run firefox in the terminal window). After Firefox crashes there may be some errors reported in the terminal that may help diagnose this.

Try installing another browser like chromium and see if chromium runs ok.
Just to be sure, have you been running the system as root? If so, you should not.
If you want to dump Mint, I would recommend Lubuntu 11.04. Lubuntu uses the LXDE desktop and is very fast and light on resources. You should be able to easily install Lubuntu from a flash drive using Unetbootin, or however you managed to install Mint.

it told me it opened 137 times...thats the only reason I know....I installed Google Chrome before I read your last post and using it now...tried to install Opera..but it would not let me..
Chrome seems to be working and I am using it now....
I not know how to run system as root ...I am very new to Linux and really like Mint 10..I was just thinking maybe it is the updates causing problems...

Have you tried running Firefox with all addons and flash disabled as I have suggeted??
Have you tried running Firefox from the terminal to see if it reports errors??
Well if chrome runs ok I would use that and see if you can run without crashes.
Something in Firefox is likely causing this. This is why I suggested running Firefox without flash or any addons.

I would do this if I knew how ..my experiencewith Linux is only just started to use...even then for mail and research...very basic use....
I am trying to learn how to use it..but it will take time....

The easy way to do this is to just rename ~/.mozilla to something else. Then restart Firefox:
Then launch Firefox. This will run Firefox with a pristine profile (without flash or any addons) that you can use for troubleshooting. You can easily get back to your old profile by running:
Note: ~ is shorthand for your /home directory.

EDIT: This does not disable flash on my Lubuntu 11.04 install. You may need to remove flash using synaptic package manager. You can always reinstall flash later after you have had time to troubleshoot this.

Have things been running ok with the chromium browser?

you have written how to run root account ..There is a trick in MINT..follow these small steps in terminal
This will ask for current password of yours then it will ask for root's new passwd ..enter the passwd carefully and remember it..
Now your root account has been activated ...You can now login through root by simply logout through GUI or type in terminal
then give your new password..Now your terminal is running under root power(Beware)
you can try running firefox under root account

Hi Tommcd....I have been using Chrome last night and tonight for about 7 hours..no problems..
on weekend I think I will re install Mint again...it could have been me in insulation..with usb thumb drive...now I know a small amount I think insulation will easier..at least I have used Linux now...I will try those commands you sent me as well before this...

So it looks like we can conclude that Firefox is the culprit here then.
Before reinstalling Mint, try running Firefox with a fresh and pristine profile as I discussed in post #12 here. Just rename your ~/.mozilla directory to something else. Then restart Firefox and try to run with that. You could very well just have a borked Firefox profile.
I wish it were cold and raining here. It is a hot and sticky 90 degrees F here in Philly!
