Firefox and Thunderbird
 

Hi,

This is probably a simple question, but one I've not found an obvious answer for.

I use Thunderbird for my e'mail client, and Firefox for my web browser. When I click on an html link in Thunderbird, I expect the browser page to open, but it doesn't.

Is there a setting for this somewhere?

I use KDE as my desktop, btw.

Get a Thunderbird extension called Launchy, then edit the launchy.xml file as necessary. I think it's in ~/.thunderbird

Somewhere, there is a place to set default applications. eg when you click an e-mail in Firefox, it looks for the system default mail application. Similar situation for ANY URL in any document---it looks for the default browser.

Yes, definitely somewhere in KDE Control Centre to specify default browser, default mail client, etc. I set it up last night in Suse10, but I can't remember exactly which Control Centre applet it is...

I found under KDE Control Center, the Component Chooser. The default browser was already set to firefox, but I reset it in case perhaps the link was broken. The default mail client was the KDE client, which I set to Thunderbird.

Double clicking (or single clicking, or tripple clicking) on URL from Thunderbird still doesn't direct the URL to Firefox.

I'm using Thunderbird 1.0.7 with Firefox 1.5.

Just for sake of argument, I loaded a URL into an Open Office document, clicked on it, and Firefox opened promptly.

This seems to be a Thunderbird issue?

Does anybody know if there's an easier way? Using this method, I have to update each user profile. What a pain.

With gnome, you can set the default web browser / email client etc. Openoffice has its own option for this in its configuration, but IIRC it defaults to the gnome one nicely. It maybe a thunderbird-under-KDE problem, but my understanding is that KDE is normally pretty good for that (although I prefer gnome myself).

It obviously works on my system. I just got here by clicking the link in Thunderbird for <<Reply to post 'Firefox and Thunderbird'>>.

The solution from the link above in Ubuntu forums does work.

edit the ~/.mozilla-thunderbird/[profile_dir]/prefs.js file and add (or change) the following:

user_pref("network.protocol-handler.app.https", "/usr/bin/firefox");

Your path to firefox may be diferent.
