Firefox 8.0

I'm trying to upgrade to Firefox 8.0. I downloaded the tar file and ran the tar command. Is there anything else I need to do like copy or move a file to a directory? When I open Firefox it still opens the 3.0 version. I'm running RHEL5. Thank you.

Suppose you extracted the firefox.tar.gz
Then after extracting, hope you did run make and make install to install it.

Once above is done link the original /usr/bin/firefox with new extracted one or run firefox from the new extracted bin folder from command prompt

I been running the real ff for quite some time now & finally got the mozilla.png for launcher & desktop icon.
One of these days I'm going to reinstall so that it's not just setup in users account.

You have to make sure that the tar file you have downloaded , does it contain source code which you can compile and run ?

Because according to my knowledge once you have download this tar file from http://download.mozilla.org/?product...nux&lang=en-US , you need to follow these instructions.

1. Untar the tar file into any of the directory where you have read-write-execute access.
2. Now you are ready to go.
3. You just need to open the terminal and browse/go to firefox directory and run 'firefox &' command.
4. If you need it on desktop/Launch pad then you have create a shortcut and into the command/run text box you need to provide the path of the firefox executable file in firefox directory.

P.S. Same thing applies to new Thunderbird 7 application.

Firefox 8

I didn't realize it was so easy. Here's the solution. For RHEL, you just have to right-click on that globe icon with a mouse wrapped around it (next to 'system'). Then click on properties. Then change the 'Command' block and put the link to your firefox' executable file. In my case, I un-tarred the file in my user directory so I had to type /home/username/firefox/firefox

@rpascua that's also how I have mine installed but installing to users directory doesn't allow the other users on my system use it.

After replying to your last reply I decided to install firefox again but for all users & it was a success.
