firebird + shockwave + flash

hey guys n girls.

first of all, whats the difference between shockwave and flash ?

when i go to a site that needs somthing i get a message
need a pluggin application/x-shockwave-flash

i click ok, and it directs me to a site where i download anf install a flashplayer plugin, all the pluggins go the the correct directory fine.

BUT, i go back to the site that needs it, and i get that same message and same re-direction to the same file i already downlaoded and installed.

so, i lookup shockwave, aparently, there is no shockwave pluggin for linux, so whats the point in telling me to install flash ? when even if i have it im gonna fail to get the shockwave which it also needs.

AGH.

is there any ways to get these sites working ????
becuase shockwave / flash graphics are becoming quite common, and although i hate MSIE, in its defence, it did support All webiste technologies.

can any1 help ???

did you try closing all open instances of your browser and then trying to reaccess the site? i'm pretty sure that you have to do this for the plug-in to work.

try this site
http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/...nguage=English

thanks for your reply, but the link you gave me was for flash player download, i need shockwave.

joesbox 09-12-2003 10:05 PM

i think that that is what you need. mozilla binaries compiled with gcc3.x (i think check the site to make sure) need flash 6. the site that you are being directed to is flash 5 i believe.

Are you installing it to your Firebird Plugins directory? I am using firebird, and it does quite well with flash once installed properly.

Azmeen 09-12-2003 10:16 PM

I don't think there's a Shockwave player for Linux yet. However, I can't confirm what your case needs... perhaps you can give the URL to that particular site?

itsjustme 09-12-2003 10:16 PM

There is a difference between Flash and the shockwave player. We have no support for Shockwave Player. For instance, if you want to play the daily jigsaw at http://www.shockwave.com you are out of luck.

If somebody cay play it, then let us know how.

qwijibow 09-13-2003 08:55 PM

lol. try to play the cartoons at..

www.rathergood.com

the problem i keep having when looking for help, is i keep saying, i HAVE installed the latest FLASH, and FLASH works fine, but i need SHOCKWAVE, and yet people keep directing me to the FLASH download site..... and i dont mean to snap at people trying to help me, but AGH.... SHOCKWAVE and FLASH are NOT the same thing.... :(

so you saying its not possible to view shockwave under linux ?

that sucks :(

Looking_Lost 09-13-2003 09:00 PM

Bah, use lynx or links. All these fancy gadgets...where's my pigeon?

Azmeen 09-14-2003 07:36 AM

I clicked a few links there... but all of them are flash animations and I can play them fine.

qwijibow 09-14-2003 12:34 PM

VERY STRANGE.. so why cant i ?

the Flash pluggin files (both of them) are in my mozzila firebird pluggin directory.

what else do i need to do to install them ??????

AGH, what am i doing wrong ?

do i need any other pluggins ????

found an interesting product that makes it possible to use shockwave in linux using wine, if you don't mind paying $35 (though there is a free trial that i downloaded to test...and indeed it works...just did the daily jigsaw at shockwave.com) the product is called crossover plugin distributed by codeweavers, inc. and also supports powerpoint, word, and excel viewers. here is the link

http://www.codeweavers.com/products/crossover/

NOTE: if you try this and install the shockwave plugin, make sure that you enable the dll for shockwave (use one of the tabs in the setup/control center) or it won't work.

happy jigsawing!

p.s. i'm sure there is someone out there more familiar with wine than i am that could figure out how to do this without the third party non-open source rigamarole....if so, lemme know how it turns out.

flash files have the .swf file extension which stands for shockwave for flash, they are actually the same, its your configuration settings that are wrong some where.

p.s. u keep saying they not the same, what makes u think they are different?

Azmeen 09-15-2003 08:27 AM

Hmm... mine works definitely fine. Just in case you're wondering... I have libflashplayer.so in my /.../MozillaFirebird/plugins dir and flashplayer.xpt in /.../MozillaFirebird/components dir.

Hope this might be beneficial to you.
