firebird freeze when click URL bar....help :)

hi, i asked over at mozilla firebird forum, responses from there wasnt help much (too many windoze user my god!!!),

i guess i gotta come back to linux home here :)

download firebird 0.7, installed at /opt, and there was no install script, so i just tar -xvzf Moz.....

go into dir, did ./MozillaFirebird &

brought up brower, everything looks good, i was able click anything else, Filed, Edit...whatever was working. EXCEPT....... the URL bar, where you type your web address.

when i click there, firebird freeze on me, even clicking the X on the upper right hand conrner wont close it. i have to go back to the shell and issue kill command.

at first i thought its because the /opt problem, so tar -xvzf (file name) under my home dir, hope it was simply permission problem. no it aint, still like that. i thought it was bug at first. but since so many people are using firebird here, i bet i must forgot to do something.

so my linux friends, your advises are greatly appreicated :D

Strange thing (I'm using 0.7 myslef and I've never had such effect)...maybe try with an older version to see if you have the same result?

sirpelidor 12-18-2003 01:13 PM

what os u running firebird w/? or all those u have listed oh your profile?

sirpelidor 12-18-2003 02:21 PM

hi mara, what firebird are u using? i just study the download site, on the default download, this give us:

MozillaFirebird-0.7-i686-pc-linux-gnu.tar.gz

but browsing the ftp, i also found:

MozillaFirebird-0.7-i686-linux-gtk2+xft.tar.gz 15
MozillaFirebird-source-0.7.tar.gz

a brunch of 0.6 (dunno the big diff between 0.7 and 0.6 yet)

thanks

fatgod 12-18-2003 06:52 PM

try the source.

sirpelidor 12-19-2003 12:56 AM

hi fatgod, i just tried source

MozillaFirebird-source-0.7.tar.gz

dude, the file name is such a big lie... took me 3 hrs compile and install, i was wonder why it takes so long, guess what, when done...it is mozilla, not firebird !!!!

jezzz....

sirpelidor 12-19-2003 02:01 AM

and....just download firebird 0.6, same thing happens, browser freeze when click URL bar :(
it must be my config or something. i dont think the mozilla 1.1 i have (come with mdk) would affect firebird, since help files say they both can be co-exist

That's odd.

Mozilla does do funky stuff if it's already running, the "mozilla-remote-client" command get executed and starts another bowser of whatever is already running, which I find very annoying.

Were you sure that Mozilla wasn't running when you started FB? And did you start FB with the full path to the compiled source ie. /opt/MozFB/MozillaFirebird ? (always a good idea when you have multiple versions installed)

sirpelidor 12-20-2003 01:28 PM

yea, i was at /opt/mozfirebird/
i type: ./MozillaFire

then the great mozilla1.1 pops up :P i was like WAAAAA!? :P

but i think one thing u are right about is the remote-client.
i read other forum, and seems other people had some problems with mozilla remote-client

(i.e. if the installed firebird succesfful, when they wanna bring mozilla up, it won't come up , only firebird comes up)

oh well... i never tried firebird before, and i tried the other day at the Sun Solaris lab, such a great browser... and i wanna have 1 on my linx box too awwwwww........ :P

I don't know if this will help, but...

I use Firebird 0.6.1 on Mandrake 9.1, and installing it was no problem at all. If installing it is causing you headaches, it's possible that you're doing it wrong. I think all you need to do is unzip the files in the tar.gz file into some directory, then click on the Firebird or Firebird.sh item in that file. That should bring up Firebird directly -- there's no make-ing or installing involved, really, so far as I know.

And about the URL bar freezing -- it sounds a little like a problem I had with trying to move things on the toolbar. Doing so would completely freeze X and I'd have to do a hard reboot. It seemed to be related to Tabbrowser Extensions, I think. There was a thread about this problem at the Mozillazine forums a while back. For what it's worth, that problem seems to resolve itself by not using Tabbrowser extensions. I hope that helps.

hi jiawen, first of all, thanks for ur time and ur response for my thread.

just make a note so other readers would know exactly where we are at, and wont make the similiar command:

if you read the first post, firebird was installed by tar -xvzf into dir, and type ./MozillaFirebird &, to brought up the browser interface.

as for second responses:
it was firebird that freeze, linux itself is fine, i just had to issue: kill in order to put it away like my first post mentioned.

i thank you for your time to response Jiawen, :)

mozilla, phoenix, and firebird have all had that problem forever. it's a
constantly recurring bug. i just downloaded mozilla 1.5 and it does that.
i downloaded firebird .7 and it does that. i build from cvs and it does
the same thing. mozilla 1.2.1 is the newest version i can use that doesn't
do that. i once got a phoenix build that only froze every 2 or 3 times
i tried to type in the url bar, but that's the best i could get. the main part of
freezing is when i try to type in a box or form like i'm typing into now.

i built mozilla a hundred times with different options over a period of
months. rarely any difference, and never a build that was stable.

anyway, you've got company. and it's not just me.
