Fire/Thunderbird Installation

Hi!
How do I install the following packages properly?

MozillaFirebird-i686-linux-gtk2+xft.tar.gz
thunderbird-i686-pc-linux-gtk2-gnu.tar.bz2

After untaring neither firebird nor thunderbird would work - I suppose that the cause for this is somehow related to gtk2 since the Firebird version without gtk2 works fine.

thanks and please forgive a newbie for bothering you
