Finding SWAT

I recently did a COMPLETE install of Red Hat Linux 8.0 thinking that I would be able to configure Samba through the web interface. Even though I selected to install every package in on the CD, SWAT does not show up anywhere. When I run the 'rpm -q swat' command, it tells me the package is not installed. Samba itself installed just fine and I can see the server on my Windows box, I just can't seem to find SWAT anywhere

Hi,

Thats because you're looking for the wrong package, try:

# rpm -q samba-swat

see ya ...

Once you have it installed check the services to see if swat is running and then try:
http://localhost:901
Use your root password.

Same thing with rpm -q samba-swat

vladkrack 11-13-2002 08:59 AM

Well, you could download it from there then:

ftp://ftp.rpmfind.net/linux/redhat/8....5-10.i386.rpm

Then install it with rpm -ivh ...

Thanks, I may try that. I'm still not sure why the Samba SMB install was successful but swat wasn;t. Isn't supposed to be an all-or-nothing scenario?

Swat is only an interface to configure samba, you don't need it really if you known how to do it thru configuration file, so it's not an essencial element to your system.

After you install samba-swat and it doesn't work, read this thread before you ask more questions about it not working.

No help either. There is no reference to swat in any directory or file or configuration parameter anywhere on the computer.

Did you install the samba-swat RPM? You need to get it off one of the install CD's or from an RPM mirror like ftp://mirrors.kernel.org.

After you install it, then the swat files will exist. swat does not automatically install and is not a part of samba, it's an additional tool to help you graphically configure samba in a web browser.

I installed EVERYTHING from the Red Hat Linux 8.0 installation CDs. I left no option unchecked when it asked me what I wanted to install. That's what I don't get. Why would it install samba and not a web interface for it.

I don't want to re-install samba because we've made a great number of configuration changes in order to accommodate our needs in the office.

samba-swat

On my Redhat 7.3 system this file was on CD 3

samba-swat-2.2.3a-6.i386.rpm

Under RH 8.0 you will find SWAT "hidden" in EXTRAS - Server Setttings where the only folder is SAMBA configuration (Swat) then when you open that it will take you directly to your browser ( and will likely Not open) See also my comment to an earlier thread on the configuration for SWAT. Hope this helps

Greetings ,Why bother with SWAT at all. Met a sysadmin at BORDERS the other day,he told me about a program WEBMIN that allows you to configure all network parameters {including SAMBA} I am still drooling from the thousands of configurations I can play with {firewalls pam authentications and RPM udates for my entire network} and that`s just the start! So if you get tired of trying to get SWAT to work ,give WEBMIN a try at www.WEBMIN.com

I seem to remember uncommenting a line of a conf file somewhere to get swat working.. I think I loaded it up in a browser and ditched it right away.. it's a lot easier to write your own smb.conf

Good books and sources available and it's not as hard as you might think.
