Filesystem integrity and electricity blackout
 

Hello.

I am facing some electricity blackouts lately and i have no ups, so my system stops (mostly midnight)

When i boot it, it checks the file system.
But now i cannot boot at all. I promptes me to a rescue shell (root).

What can i do now?

I use SUSE 9 Pro

Read the messages it gives you carefully. It may want you to run fsck with certain options. If it asks if you want to go to a root shell then do so and then do as it asks... Or post the inf here for us to look at. If you are using ext3 there should be no problem, tho if it wants you to check manually there must be something of a problem so there is a slight chance of some data loss - tho I have been through this a few times without any lasting problem... We have frequent power problems as well and can't afford ups for all the old boxes...

i use reiserfs as my filesystem i believe that is morte stable than ext3.
Can fsck fix the problem?

Uh-oh... Okay, well, maybe... I used to use reiser and liked it and I do think it can be faster, but it tends to group small files together into bigger files (or some such) so there is a risk of losing more when thing go bad (as I understand it)... But your only opions are fsck, and the results should be favourable. But It's been a while since I used reiser, so hopefully a reiser user will join in! They might have better advice than myself... Not sure what's available in latest reisertools etc...

i think that reiserfs causes much less problems than ext2 or ext3 during a forcable reboot or electricity black out.

I used it for years with no trouble either... I was just thinking of stuff I had read, but more to do with actual damge on on the disk surface and so forth. I'd still say it'll be okay, I'm just not up with reiser these days.
