Files lost on external USB drive after using Linpus
 

Hi, I plugged my windows xp external usb 1 Terrabyte drive into my Acer Aspire One by mistake that runs Linpus Linux, now when i plugged it back into the PC the drive could not be seen, so to cut a long story short i used a file recovery software to rescue the files off the drive, BUT the files are now different in some way they have been changed, does anybody know what Linpus might have done to them and what i could do to get the files working again...

This Really is Important and worth many free drinks...Please Help

Ok..how about giving us some useful information? Like WHAT "file recovery software"? What kind of files were 'changed'? Exactly what happened?? Right now, all we know is you plugged SOME kind of drive in, then ran some software on it after, on some kind of file, and now you can't use them.

Just plugging an external drive into a computer is not going to cause files to be lost. As TBone suggests, you need to tell us the whole story.

did you run any root commands while it was plugged in?
if not then as pixellany says just plugging it in will not change the data

Ok Fellas, the drive was a 1 Terrabyte Western Digital External USB Drive, as windows could't see my drive i used recover my files to recover it, when i ran the programme the partition was Linus EXT1 and not NTFS when i tried to repair the partition it said that there were overlapping partitions and i couldnt repair it. I then managed to copy the files to another 1 Terrabyte drive of the same spec, while the drive was plugged into the Acer Aspire I only looked for the drive and it came up in a window, the files of mine were not destroyed they are just now unreadable by their application ie something has changed in them, i think i will download the original file again and compare it with magic iso as the files are iso's , i do know that linux text docs are written differently so maybe Linpus has rewriteen them.. I Dont Know

I'm afraid I cannot follow the above---you need to use shorter sentences, punctuation, and capital letters.

First, what did you do after plugging the drive into the Linux computer? As already stated, just plugging the drive in would not cause anything to be changed.

I am sorry i cannot make this any more simple for you guys on here, i have tried to explain in the easiest way possible, the shortest sentances and the best punctuation. Never in 20 years have i come across a Forum like this one, I realise now why Linux has failed to take over the world. Forget this complex question , i will probably get my 5 year old neice to solve it when she has 5 minutes spare.

Please do let us know what solution she comes up with. Then, we can perhaps reverse-engineer the solution, to determine exactly what the problem was, and better help the next member who encounters this situation.

The last post but mine may have shown an irony equivalent to affray.

However, my best evaluation of your post beginning "OK fellas..." is that it is not sufficiently understandable to be of use if someone is trying to help you.

The members who respond to questions are not usually as barbed as Sasha, but they have expectations that they hope will be met as a minimum, presuming always that all parties are making the best effort they can.

Well, to cut a long story short, as you said, Linpus probably didn't do anything to your files. Windows had some sort of cramp when you plugged it back in (probably to do with it being uncleanly mounted/dismounted), and when you ran the "software" on it, it made things worse.

Sorry if you feel like we've been so unfair, etc., etc., but really, read what you've posted objectively, and see if you can make sense of it.

Kinda like taking a car to a mechanic, and saying "ok, look, the car made this noise, and a light came on. To make a long story short, I put stuff in the gas and oil, and adjusted something, and now it won't work. What's the problem with it??" The mechanic would ask for alot more info...and based on your response, you'd get upset with him.

Good luck, and if you'd prefer not to use Linux, then so be it. Also, since you decided to be insulting, in referencing your 5 year old niece...what does that say about YOU, since she's got to fix something you broke. After all....you've got first-hand knowledge; all we've got is some very vague information.
