file size soft=-1 what does this mean and how do I verify it...Redhat.

I assume it means that file size is unlimited, but I'm not sure how to check. I did verify that quotas are not in place.

oh and the ulimit command reports "unlimited". What is this "soft=-1" and why am I looking for it.

Are you talking about a soft quota limit? In quotas, a value of -1 means unlimited. If quotas aren't in place though, their settings don't matter.

As for why you're looking for it -- I don't know. Your message is extremely vague and my crystal ball is in the shop. Did you get an error message about disk space or something?

sorry. I felt rather vague when I posted. Basically, I have a list of things to check for and one of them is File size soft=-1. I know on our AIX systems that means unlimited file size.
So I assume they are talking about the same idea in Redhat, I just wanted to make sure there isn't an actual variable in Redhat that had to be set.
As it is, I verified that quotas are not in place.
I'll go with that.

Thanks for responding to my bad post...somedays I'm dumber than others.
