File Server help

Hi, I'm looking for a simple way to make debian 6 into a file server. someone suggested "SCP".

CPU: sempron 140 (downclocked to 1.8GHz)
RAM: 2GB 1333MHz
gigabit NIC/switch

well yes scp could be seen to make a machine a "file server". but that can mean anything at all. What do you actually want out of this system?

I want it to host my files. I need to access it from my window machines from filezilla so i can dump my stuff over there. I've been waiting for this for a while, so i have several hundred gigabytes of stuff to export to the server.

so you want a dumping ground, not a formal service? scp will be fine.

it's already running if ssh is. just use a suitable client and off you go.

+ 1 sshfs
edit: i just realized you are using windows clients so sshfs mite be difficult (winscp is not a bad alternative).

You should be able to use Filezilla for this: just choose Protocol SFTP when choosing the server to connect to.

just tried to transfer about 5GB of files... i didn't even break 10MB/s. even it's not secure as a transfer method, i'd like something else as i'm not download from an offsite server.
