File Server
 

As the first step in the proof of concept here, I would like to set up the Linux box as a file server. What do I use to set up a Linux box as a file server? Do I use samba? If there is a good how to, please let me know the link. It took me two days to find this site.

Yes, assuming you are sharing to windows machines samba is the best option. If you need some help, check out the docs and samba.org.

There are some good how-tos on the site that should help you set up your shares. As alway, if you get stuck just post!

EDIT:
I should add, there is also SWAT which is a web based samba share configure tool. It is a little easier than working in the files.

However if the Linux Box is going to be a fileserver for just other linux machines you should rather look at NFS:

If your mixing it up with other Linux or *nix machines, you will want to use NFS (Network File System) most likely instead of Samba. Samba is for Linux connecting to Windows and vice versa, to share directories.. etc.

Thanks! I'm looking into SAMBA because it will be servicing Windows machines.
