File browser windows keep poping up

I am using ubuntu 9.04 with GNOME. When I have a usb device plugged in, a file browser window pops up. If I close it, it comes back in few seconds. And if I do not close it, another window pops up. I have tried to unmount the device while letting the device remain plugged in. But it still behaves the same. There must be a simple set up that I am missing. Could someone point me to that?
