File Assignment Question

Under preferences -> file management, how can I assign a particular program to open when I click on a file? I'm looking for linux counterpart of .exe. Where can I find this and what is it called?

k i am going to take a stab at this one, and i don't really understand what your saying, so i'll answer both point of views that i have right now:
a) if your asking what file is equivalent to an exe file in windows, then the answer is none...linux doesn't even need file extentions...
b) if your asking how do you run an exe in linux, then the answer is you really can't unless you use wine or something similiar to run that program..

Yes. Those were the answers I was looking for. So it is not possible to automatically assign a software to be used to automatically open a file?

that's not a "linux" issue... it id down to the window manager you are using... which you haven't said anythign about.. remember, not everyone uses KDE, it should be perfectly possible though. the above guesses didn't actaully answer your question now we actually know what it is.
