File Access Rights/Windows
 

Setting up a RH server to store files for Windows (2000 and XP) workstations. Using Samba, it all works well, however . . .

1. I have set up private and shared directories. For the shared directories I ran chgrp and chmod, each with -R in order to effect the necessary acces rights. All was good until the first user created a new file. The rights did not apply to new files and no one else can access the newly created file in the shared directory. How do I set it up to "grandfather" rights onto any new files or folders within the already shared "space"?

2. Long file names with spaces. The Windows users use lots of lfn's but I have found that to access them from the linux end I have to enclose them in quotes. It works, but is there a better way to do it?

good question with a vague answer...

I use win2k and win2003k servers with xp desktops and linux samba servers and desktops.

If you want permissions to hold on samba, you need to use something like ldap...that is the windows boxes need to log onto the linux box and the linux box becomes the 'domain controller'. They need to have all the perms and settings on the samba box.

Vague I know, but hope you get my drift.

Not terribly excited about making a domain controller, especially if it causes all the workstations to generate new domain profiles for each user as Windows is likely to do.
