few questions regarding KDE??
 

Im running redhat 9 and recently started using KDE. So far I like what i see, however, i do have a few questions and being a newbie, i would appreciate any advise regarding this matter

a- i noticed that KDE does not have xmms? can i download it or is xmms strictly for gnome?
b- if i wanted to play mpeg files what software would i use in KDE?
c- i have read a few threads discussing how KDE is slower than Gnome . i havent noticed the difference yet, but then again i have not run any big programs such as openoffice,etc

i have an AMD 900MHZ, 512MB SDRAM, 40GB 7200RPM 2MB BUFFER, ASUS MOBO , should i upgrade my hardware or is this sufficient to successfully run KDE?

d- one last questions, how do i make a shortcut in KDE?

a) of course you can download it and it works
b) there's a graphical front end for mplayer called kmplayer. there are plenty, mostly based on mplayer and xine.
c) certainly no need to upgrade, buddy.
d) you mean in the gui? i don't know, sorry

You don't seem to understand the consept of desktops in linux. If you have a program installed you have a program installed, no matter the desktop. If you have never used the console before now may be the time because you might only be able to open it by going to a console and opening it there.

Same with video files

KDE is bulky buy IMO your hardware should be fine.

Right click and then link or something. I know it works on the desktop, never tried it in the file manager.

the reason why i asked about xmms is because i did not find it in kde. after switching to the console and typing xmms i get the following message" unable to display". i know this sound trivial to most of your guys but i just started using linux 2 weeks ago.

Look in the menu under multimedia, and you should find all sorts of programs for displaying video and listening to music. You may have to install the kdemultimedia package if Their nothing in there.

Also under settings there should be a program call "Menu Updating Tool" click on this and click scan. It should find programs installed on your machine that are not already in the menu.

Simply tick the ones you want adding and click apply then close.

by the way what exactly is xmms?

xmms is a multimedia player used for music files. I use Juk myself.

xmms is a skinnable (is that the word?) audio player that resembles winamp. plays all sorts of audio file formats.
