Sounds like it's dying while trying to connect - so it can't even establish the connection.

Can you telnet from the machine running fetchmail to the server?
Code:
telnet pop.gmail.com 110
Can you post your fetchmail config in full? Replace your username and password with XXX to protect them...

I can't connect to pop.gmail.com on port 110 from my work or home connections - I'd suggest you have a configuration issue there.

Perhaps they run POP3 on a non-standard port? or a hostname other than pop.gmail.com?

Maybe firewall output configuration is scr#%ing your connection...

Ricio - I doubt it... I have an "accept all" for my Desktop IP address at work as does my development server (tried from both), and I'm not running an outbound firewall at home and it couldn't connect either...

Could it be that gmail has you access POP on port 995 over an SSL connection ?.. I mean after all that's how Thunderbird is configured to retrieve mail from gmail using POP..

You can telnet all day to 110 and you'll never get a thing..

Google Mail POP How-to

How to setup Gmail POP in fetchmail
