Feel theres not enought support for X and Screen Refresh, Prove me wrong lol :-P
Okay, im a relatively new to Linux. (Been using Linux off and on for 6 years, Redhat, Mandrake and recently Debian and Slackware).
Recently got a box together to run Linux, had Redhat Up and running for a few weeks quiet nicely and decided to run Debian, and once I couldn’t install that have tried my hand at Slackware. The biggest problem so far and as im a newbie, its probably only a small problem for most day to day Linux users is configuring the X Server (X Windows) to run the resolution and refresh rate I want. Now under redhat 9.0 (Kernel 2.4) my system ran quiet nicely at 1152x864 85hz, I did try to config it to 100hz but it wouldn’t let me, but I was happy with 85hz and that was the native for that screen. Anyways now running slackware under Gnome I can not getting anything above 60hz in 1152x864. Now I know everyone will say 'Configure XF86Config.conf'. I have, I have also run configXF86 and entered all the settings for my Monitor and didn’t help. Slackware 9.1 under KDE did have an option to setup the refresh rate for a current Resolution but it only had 60hz in it, Is there a 'HowTo' for XF86Config or anything on the web cause I have looked in the gnome, Xserver, Slackware, Redhat, Debian sites and nothing definitive on them in regards to this problem. Any help would be great or a url to a HowTo or Forum post would also be great. Thanks in advanced. Alex |
Have you tried "man XF86config"? Obviously, you would run that from a command line.
|
Also if you can, give us the maximum dot clock of your video card(or the bandwidth of the monitor whichever is lower), the horizontal frequency and the vertical refresh rate.

Okay man XF86Config has given me a whole heap of info to work with, thanks for that XavierP
also my video card is a Sparkle GeForce2 TI 64mb and my Monitor is a ADI G900 im also running the box through a 2 port KVM, the spec's on the monitor are: Horizontal: 30-96KHz Vertical: 50-160Hz Bandwidth: 202.5MHz Dont know the Dot Clock for the vc. Thanks |
Yeah try if you can get it working properly first, if you can't give this a go, put this in your XF86Config, under the "Monitor" Section
ModeLine "1152x864" 111.26 1152 1184 1248 1440 864 866 869 909 # 111 MHz, 77.3 kHz, 85.0 Hz which will force X to use the specified timing/refresh rates however note that this has the potential to damage your monitor so use with caution. |
Thanks Demonbane
will try it now, and my Monitor has Auto Shut Off so it wont damage this monitor. Thanks |
Yeah that worked sweat Demonbane,
How did you come up with that line entry? |
