Fedore Core 1 >115 updates available.....what to do?
 

Greetings

I decided to take the linux plunge.
I bought the Red Hat Linux Bible with the 3 Fedora 1 CDs
Installed it.
No problems. Really.
Recognized my printers, network cards, sound cards, video, etc right off.
I even was able to setup a mini network with my Windows machine and share a DSL internet account. (I also setup a Coyote router)

This was much easier than I thought.

I was shocked though then the Updater said there were over 155 updates available. I scanned the list, some of these appeared major and I will need to do this I know....soon.

But, I have had experience with XP SP2 and the automatic updates. I don't like them, but they work, transparently. I have not had any downtime while allowing Microsoft to handle the updating. I don't like what they do, but so far, I have had no problems.

Is the Red Hat updating process as transparent as Microsoft's? Since my Linux installation is new and no vital files are on this machine, I am willing to let Red Hat try, but I wonder what is the proper way to handle this many updates.

Also, I installed Macromedia's Flash plugin. Works in Mozilla except no sound? Is this another indication-- along with the many needed updates --- that I need to upgrade to a new kernel?

Present setup is PIII, 256 ram, Kernel 2.4.22-1.2115.npt1.i586

The process can be run automatically but you initially have to double click on the icon and setup the application and select the updates that you wish to do.

In all honesty, and in my opinion, the default updater is somewhat buggy still. So if this doesn't work for you google for apt-get or yum. These are other updater options.

You might also want to look to FC3.
