fedora4 will not boot to gui

Hello all.

Newbie problem

I have fedora4 installed and have been running it for some time. I did some updating and tried to down load some applications. Machine worked fine, shut down for the night, but on startup, it will only load into terminal. What did I do and how can I fix it without going throu the whole shebang.

thank you

What happens if you login and enter 'startx' ? (if you end up with an unusable screen - hit Ctl-Alt tab to exit out of X-windows). Sounds like something undid your automatic startup of xwindows or the display manager.

sorry. it did not work. Tried it once and nothing. Just goes back to terminal screen. Will look to see if x window is still installed.

Are you loggin in as a user or admin? If you are logging in as a user, try the admin just to see.

I think that I am in as adminstrater. I try as user, then type su,and am logged in as root. Is that the same thing? Any way, I get the same reply, 'command not found'. I installed this copy some time ago, and have been looking for information on operating it every since. The manual seems to be written by the designers, and they understand it much better than some one like me that knows very little. I started out with dos in the early eighties, and went to windows when I had to. Still can't seem to get the hang of linux.

thanks for the help
