Fedora/Suse install problems
 

Hi all this is my first post here, and i am a newbie at Linux, so please, be gentle :P

My problem is, that i boot up the cd (this example with Fedora core 2) and just press enter for normal graphical install, after some time, it comes up with this error message:

crc error
VFS: Cannot open root device "<NULL>" or unknown-block(72,3)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(72,3)

I have two disks, one with windows xp installed, and nothing on the other one.

Here is the error message i get for suse 9.2 professional:

crc error
EXT2-fs: unable to read superblock
MINIX-fs: unable to read superblock
isofs_fill_super: bread failed, dev=md0, iso_blknum16, block=32
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(9,0)

Please help me out with this, i have had this error for like two weeks, can't figure out whats wrong.

Anyone knows what could cause this? :confused:

Are you trying to install on a blank partition or on that blank hard drive? If you are trying to install alongside windows, have you already made a couple of extra partitions?

looks like the install cds are damaged. try get new ones

yeah, your installation CD's are probably corrupt and as mentioned above you may have to get new ones. I think fedora Core has an option to test your installation media before you actually begin the installation, try that and see if it informs you of nay problems with the media.

I am trying to do it on a harddisk, with no partitions yet, well thats atleast what i want it too, but i cant get to the installation yet so. But i dont think the cds are broken, it looks kinda wierd that i download both fedora core 2 and suse 9.2 and burn them and get kinda the same error. Is there some solution to this? Or have none of you seen this before?

I have now tried to do the media check, it just gets stuck the same place with the same error.

Did you burn those CD's using a strange format? One that cannot be recognised by the Linux kernel, maybe...

It was packed as a iso file, i went into nero, chose burn image, chose the image, burned it.

CRC ( Cyclic Redundancy Check ) is a common error that occurs when your drive cannot read a CD / DVD disc.
This can be due to many factors including poor quality media, a poor burn, a dirty disc, or degrading reading abilities of the drive that is trying to read the disc.
The disc might be readable in another drive, then again it might not be.
I suggest trying to burn the files onto another type of CD-R and trying your install again. ;)

I'll try to burn the cd 1 onto another media, ill come back with info as soon as done.

It comes up with the same error now.

I have burned it on another media (Fujitsu) and tried it out on 3 computers, comes up with the same error

Very strange! Did you use RW-media perhaps? I know some cases where people had trouble with these.

Using a normal CD-R, i don't know if it's the burner, but don't think so. I burned Mandrake 10.1 community and it runs smoothly

What exact drive are you using to burn?
What speed are you burning?
It might help to try burning at a slower speed such as 16X.

I suppose it is also possible that the ISO file you downloaded is corrupt, which is showing itself when you try to run the install. You might want to try to download the ISO again...
