Fedora lockup

Hi

I'm installing Fedora 6 on an older P3 system (20GB HDD, 128MB RAM) and it keeps giving fatal errors on install, or the install locks up. Any suggestions.

Can you give us some more details. What errors are given? When does it this happen and at what stage of the install are you at? It is hard to help with the given information.

OK, when I attempt the install again, I'll take some good notes and pass them on.

Ok, this morning I attempted 3 tries on the install and here's what happened....

1) The install got stuck on loading: @ 43%
yp-tools-2.9-0.1-i386
NIS (or YP) client programs

2) The install got stuck on loading: @ 21%
redhat-artworks-5.0.8-1.fc6-i386
Artwork for Red Hat default look and feel

3) The install got stuck on:
Checking dependencies in packages 0%

In the other attempts I had actually gotten further but the install froze. I am beginning to believe it is hardware related. This is an older Compaq, with only 128MB on it. I'll see about upgrading the RAM some more and give it another shot, unless someone on here has a great way to get past these stops. THANKS!

Try doing an install using text mode. It seems that the minimum ram for a graphical install is 192 mb of ram. Also if you can try using say debian minimal install since it is a text mode install just to see if it is your hardware or something else.

Good suggestion...

I've actually selected the text mode to install with, and it still hangs (those last three attempts were with text mode).

Another question, when you said debian minimal, do you mean without selecting the "mode" of the server that I'm installing (ie: office, web browser, etc...)?

When you say "gets stuck" ... can you check on other
consoles (Alt-F2, F3, and so on) whether you get any
actual error messages as well? Chances are that the
machine has problems (maybe faulty RAM, maybe DMA
issues).

Cheers,
Tink

I could be wrong but Tinkster, If he was to switch to a new tty, could he not use dmesg or would errors like that show up in dmesg.
