Fedora Linux - Command Line only...?
 

Easy now...

Just wanted a bit of advice on installing a command-line only OS.

Probably gonna go with Fedora... Pretty knew to Linux and the support seems really good?

I'm only running a P3 with 512 RAM, only want the server to perform a few things, firewall (IPMASQ), Samba, ftp... But for performance reasons i'm thinking of installing just a command line version.

Is this easy enough to with Fedora or is there a better option?

Any other advice would be much appreciated!

If you want to make your current Fedora system a CLI OS then edit /etc/inittab.

Change the line:
id:5:initdefault:
to:
id:3:initdefault:

reboot

He hasn't got Fedora installed yet..

It's not hard to do. You can install the graphical stuff (X Window System, KDE/GNOME) and then do as jailbait says and edit your inittab file, so the system boots to a CLI. Either that, or just don't install the graphical stuff. It might be a good idea to install some graphical stuff (unless you've not got enough space), so you can use it if you find the CLI hard to use (well, it's certainly easier doing stuff the graphical way!).

When installing the OS just don't install X and any X apps, this can be done with most distros, if you have allready installed the system do as jailbait says, that prevents X being started at the end of the boot process
