Fedora for free or Enterprise for $80?
 

Hello everyone

I want to swap 4 Windows 2003 servers to redhat. I am total new and want to start playing before going live. Is is word paying the $80 for Enterprise, or is Fedora safe for a newbe?

You're right about having a play around first- you don't want to lose crucial data. :)

Fedora is fine for a newbie- remember that you don't have to pay for quality. Of course, it's nice to support open source products monetarily if you can, but in the open source world, it's not a case of "pay more = more quality" or "free = bad".

Also, this (LQ Suggestions and Feedback) isn't really the right place for this question, I've reported it to the moderator to be moved to the right place. Don't worry about posting this again in a more suitable sub forum, just let the mods move it to where it should be so those who know a bit about your question have a chance to see it and answer it.

You can also try CentOS. It is EXACTLY like Red Hat...without the Red Hat Logos. Another difference is that it uses yum for updates...if you are interested in an "Enterprise" distro, then CentOS is a good choice...

Having said that. Fedora is a GREAT distro! In fact I learned on Fedora 4 and learned ALOT...good luck! Also you can find TONS of informations here:

Once you get CentOS(?) installed, since you're already a Lotus Notes expert, that would probably be a good place to start.

Notice the "Search" button at the top of this page, it has an "advanced" option. Do a "Title only" search for Lotus, and you'll find lots of News articles to help you get started.
