Fedora core4 installation issues

Hello every body..
I am trying to install the fedora core 4 installation.Everything goes fine untill all the package are installed. After the all the selected package are installed there comes a post install phase.the display says that it is doing the post install configuration.at this point an error messege is shown saying that access refused. The messege is shown like a piece of garbage. After that it says installing boot loader.after around 3 minutes the boot loader is installed and the screen says fedora core 4 has been sucessfully installed.please reboot the machine and remove the source media.i take it out the DVD Disk and reboot. Now after i reboot and when about to start linux the kernel panic shows up.and thats the end.

I have been trying to install fedora core 4 for since last 5 months.I have been trying to install it on many assembled and branded Pc's.I have tried CD as well as DVD disk source.I have more than 4 years of linux experience.I have installed linux on over 100 times successfully. the following is the detail error messege after the installation is complete and starting the linux for the first time.
uncompressing linux.........ok booting the kernel
redhat nash version 4.2 is starting
mkrootdev : label / not found
mount: error 2 mounting ext3
error opening /dev/console!!! : 2
error dup2 ing fd of 0 to 0
" " " " 1
" " " " 2
switchroot : mount failed:22
kernel panic not syncing attempted to kill init.
Can anyone help.

This is probably a stupid question, but is there any particular reason that you aren't using Fedora Core 5? A more recent version might well help you get around this problem.

ok i tried to install FC5.Everything went fine except the following.
1.I can not find Disk partitioning phase when installing FC5 in test mode.Previous version had diskdruid.
2. if i do the default installation , i mean with out choosing the custom program package my Display is alright.but if choose custom
package then my display is not showing up,Only CLI.my inittab is set to runlevel 5, i have tried the command startx, init 5 from the command line also. But does not work.
3. it is fine with me if i can install the rest of the application packages after post install. But when i click on add remove software.it gives an error messege.
4.What are the package names for the Display mode.Previously in redhat they had X86 ...or somethng like that.May be i can try install and uninstall again. In redhat there was a command redhat-config-X86.What is the counterpart in fedora.I tried to see a list by doing system-config-xxxxxx.But the display was the listed.
Thanx.

I'm afraid I don't know what test mode is when installing Fedora, I've not been using Fedora much lately. You said that startx doesn't work, what errors do you get? If I remember correctly, XFree86 has been replaced by XOrg. You'll probably want to install Gnome or KDE if you have a reasonably recent computer.

I don't know about the add/remove software program either, I always use yum to manage software in Fedora. What is the exact error message that the program gives when you try to run it?

The tool for adjusting your display is system-config-display, but I don't know if it will work in text mode, I've only ever run it from inside X.

If you've not seen them before, I recommend reading Stanton Finley and mjmwired's guides to setting up Fedora Core 5. They go into quite a lot of detail on how to set various things up, including yum.

You could also try Ubuntu, if there's no specific reason you want to use Fedora. I have found Ubuntu easier to set up than Fedora, and you can even get free CDs from https://shipit.ubuntu.com/.
