I'm afraid I don't know what test mode is when installing Fedora, I've not been using Fedora much lately. You said that startx doesn't work, what errors do you get? If I remember correctly, XFree86 has been replaced by XOrg. You'll probably want to install Gnome or KDE if you have a reasonably recent computer.
I don't know about the add/remove software program either, I always use yum to manage software in Fedora. What is the exact error message that the program gives when you try to run it?
The tool for adjusting your display is system-config-display, but I don't know if it will work in text mode, I've only ever run it from inside X.
If you've not seen them before, I recommend reading
Stanton Finley and
mjmwired's guides to setting up Fedora Core 5. They go into quite a lot of detail on how to set various things up, including yum.
You could also try Ubuntu, if there's no specific reason you want to use Fedora. I have found Ubuntu easier to set up than Fedora, and you can even get free CDs from
