Smile fedora core 9 add/remove software not working as root

I have just installed Fedora Core 9. As others have mentioned, the add/remove software operation has changed drastically. I have no problems adding software with my FC7 and FC8 installations. However with FC9 64, if I am logged on as ROOT, nothing happens when I click install. If I am logged on as a user, the system responds that it cannot continue without an internet connection, which it has. I am trying to add the MySql GUI Administrator. The program downloads the available packages, allows me to click on the correct one and then does nothing when I try to install as ROOT and complains about the ethernet connection as a non root user. So far, I certainly liked the package manager under previous FC versions better that this one.
Thanks for any help which may be provided.

Just out of curiosity...if this is a brand-new install, why didn't you install the latest Fedora 10, which solves that problem?

Dear TB0ne,

Thank you for your response. We have a 64 bit server with a 3Ware raid card driving the SATA disks. I attempted to install FC10 64 and after the initial load and reboot, Fedora says that it cannot find any hard drive. I contacted 3Ware and they indicated that their driver is tested and works for FC9 but is untested for FC10. They requested that I let them know for sure that FC10 will not work and they will proceed to see what the problem is.

For that reason, I was forced to go back to FC9 64.

Are you indicating in your post that there is a known problem in FC9 with the add/remove software? If so, that would certainly explain my problem. We have been using Red Hat and Fedora Core for years but this is my first post on linuxquestions so please forgive my not knowing how to do things on this site correctly.

Thanks again.

God Bless,

I've heard of the FC9 software problem before, and you posted the question exactly right, which is more than alot of folks do.

Was just asking, since FC9 is a little old, and wasn't sure if you were aware of that. FC11 is in beta right now, and should be out soon. And just because the 3ware drivers is untested, doesn't mean it won't work. Give it a shot....

You may want to consider CentOS as well...that's essentially RedHat Enterprise linux, but community supported, rather than the pay-for support with RHEL. RedHat based, as is Fedora....

Dear TB0ne,

I did fully install FC10 64 and after the reboot, Fedora indicated that it could not find any hard drives.

Do you know if there are any workarounds for FC9 or am I simply stuck until 3Ware perfects the driver for FC10?

Thanks again.

Hmm...if you did a full install of FC10, it must have found the drives at build time. If that's the case, the module for your drive controller, probably didn't make its way into the initrd.

Try booting from CD, and going into 'rescue mode'..(don't have alot of experience with FC10), or something like that. From there, you should be able to manually load the driver, then there may be an option to continue booting from hard drive. OpenSuSE can do that from the boot menu, so I'm sure FC10 has a similar option.

If you can get past that, and get the system booted, it would be a good idea to research "mkinitrd", and put the right module in it. You can boot from CD/DVD, drop to a prompt (see "rescue mode"), and do an "lsmod", which will list the modules.

Dear TB0ne,

Thanks again for your response. It appeared to me as you said that it saw the array during the initial load but did not see it on the reboot. I will try those things you suggested but I am not as fluent as I would like to be. I do have another here who can probably do a better job than I in carrying out your instructions.

I have posted a second question which I have not gotten any answers on yet. If I may, I will run it by you to see if you have any ideas.

We essentially have linux servers running vncserver and our users are windows boxes running either realvnc or tightvnc. I cannot see the pattern, but the numeric pad gives us a lot of problems. Sometimes it works perfectly. Sometimes only the #5 key will not work and other times the entire keypad is useless. Do you know if there is something I am overlooking? We have had this problem with FC 6, FC 7, FC 8. I cannot believe that there is not something that I need to do to make this problem go away. Our users generally complain and use the upper row of number keys when the keypad is not working.

I would really appreciate any ideas you might have.

Have a great evening.

God Bless,

Flockmeister
