Fedora Core 2 laptop install issue

I am going to start a linux class in January, but am trying to install Linux now... (Fedora Core 2)
the issue I am having is:
Using the graphical install, the process gets to the installation method, it can not find drivers for my dvd drive model hl-dt-st dvdram gsa-t50l. I have 4 installation CD's.
I have tried various drivers from the list it provides, but none seem to work, some do nothing, some lock the laptop up.

What should I be using for a driver? and where to get one that will work?

Thanks

What you should be using, is a current version of Linux. Not surprised you're having problems...FC2 is ANCIENT. The latest version is 12...you're 10 major versions behind.

Download the current version of Fedora, and load it. If it doesn't work, come back and tell us what problems you're having, and tell us something about your hardware.

This is the version supplied by the school... will the differences be noticeable enough for the class? I do not know enough about linux to not follow along with the text..

Fedora is the free version of Desktop Red Hat and is used by Red Hat for testing purposes. It is widely used distribution of Linux. From a limited search it seems Fedora Core 2 was realeased in April, 2005 so if your computer and CD or DVD drive is that old or older it should work. There is no support for Fedora Core 2. Fedora has support for its releases for a specified time period, not a Fedora user so I'm not sure what that period is. I would expect somewhere in the range of 6-18 months?

It seems a little strange that your school would be using something that outdated when they can obtain a new version for free? You might inquire about that of your instructor.

Fedora Core 2 was released on May 18, 2004, codenamed Tettnang.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fedora_...re_1.E2.80.934

Can be installed to old hardware, 2003 and earlier.
Not very useful, some packages are available, no updates
since 2005.

I don't know but I doubt that they would have removed any functionality.

Linux is no way near the way that Microsoft drastically changes Windows's inner workings every time.

When I upgraded form Fedora 11 to 12, there were hardly any noticeable changes, none of them hurting backwards compatibility.

it is not surprising you are having trouble with fedora 2
it is so old that it will not even install on new hardware .
it is old enough that a lot of hardware was not even around when it came out

BUT it you DO NEED THAT VERSION FOR SCHOOL -- and cannot get them to use a newer version --
i would find a VERY cheep 5 year old computer and install it on that .

OH YES, a VERY big difference

think of it as this

the school has you install MS Windows 95 or 98 for a class
In a windows 7 and vista world .

But isn't it still the same GNU/Linux inside (with some new added functionality, of course)?

It's not like software written on Fedora 2 will not run on any other Linux, is it?

But most software that was written for Windows 95 will probably not work on 7 because they change it's basic inner workings so much every time.

and just TRY to put win 98 on a 64 bit cpu computer .

Will software written on Fedora 2 run on Fedora 12? Almost certainly yes.

Will software written on Windows 95 run on Windows 7? Probably not.

Did Linux change it's API and basic directory layout since the times of Fedora 2? Not in a way that hurts backward compatibility.

Did Windows change it's API and basic directory layout since Windows 95? Yes.

Possibly anti-climactic, but:

First, ask the instructor to consider using an up-to-date version of Linux.

If he/she insists on using Fedora 2, and him/her how to install it. If he/she does not know, it might be time for a different school/class/instructor.

I did not see SATA mentioned here: I'm pretty sure that Fed 2 will not support SATA.

I downloaded and installed 12... it went very smooth...and as I am used to Windoze, it went very fast too...

Talking to the instructor about the installation of 2 is going to be my first conversation with him/her...
