Fedora 9 boots to text log-in prompt without a GUI

Hello folks. I have installed Fedora 9 sulphur on dual boot with WinXP with grub boot loader. It never boots to a GUI desktop unless I log in as root and type 'startx'. Even then, it takes me to the desktop where I can't adjust the screen resolution. Because the system-config-display window doesn't show any option other than 600X400. I have gone through the XORG.Conf where all the resolutions are listed. I have renamed it as well(as directed in some Linux threads) but to no avail. I am using a VIA Unichrome monitor which used to function absolutely fine with a Fedora 6 previously. Can anyone help me out plz ?

run on the shell
Code:
X -reconfigure
start the xserver with
Code:
X -config /root/xorg.conf.new
Then you'll have a standard probed xorg.conf file to test and switch around.
copy it to /etc/X11/xorg.conf

The most common problem that you can't raise the display solution is that the monitor is limited. Choose manually a "generic LCD Display" thats fit closes to your's.

If this works fine you can edit
/etc/inittab

check the Line inittab defaults that must point to runlevel 5

Hello Odcheck. Thanx for finding time for answering to my query. Yes I have already set the /etc/inittab to boot with runlevel 5 and now my installation boots to GUI. But selecting my monitor as a generic LCD hasn't helped much as the resolution can't still be adjusted. You know what I am wondering ? My FC 6 installation was working like a breeze with the same configuration and with the same videocard. I didn't have to change anything in order to get it to work. Do you think FC 6 and FC 9 have different implications with the same configuration in xorg.conf and inittab with the same video card ? In fact, I have another problem and that's of browsing the web pages. I am connecting to the internet via bluetooth with a GPRS connection and the dialer I am using is kppp. Everything is fine and the connection is working alright. But everytime Firefox is started, it goes to offline mode and when brought back to online, it doesn't make any difference. I have stopped iptables (service iptables stop). That didn't do any better. Could you guess why ? Actually, I badly need to remain connected to internet through Fedora while finding and applying the fixes offered by you people. Everytime browsing the web for a fix to a Fecora problem and then rebooting to the same to apply that fix doesn't sound very convenient. I hopw you can understand my problem. Thanx anyway for your advice and looking forward to your next one too !!

Regarding the Video Settings, I still don't know which video card you're using?
Maybe you need to load some needed modules(drivers).
And regarding the Firefox, Bluetooth thing, you maybe should check your /etc/resolv.conf and look out that the correct DNS Server is listed there.
