Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

Okay, before you get all worked up because I'm installing Fedora 8 and not Fedora 9/10/11, let me just say that I need that specific kernel for a certain application, and that this is not my computer at home.
I have this computer linked to a KVM switch and previously I couldn't get it passed the part in the installation where it asks questions about the harddrive. It has been in for "repairs" and I got it passed that part, but it takes very long to do anything. Sometimes it even looks as if it "hangs" and the GUI is slow.
It has taken since yesterday afternoon until now (16 hours) to install 618 of the 1419 packages.
fedora 8 might not recognise very new hardware , seeing as there is no support updates to it .
Problems with Linux and KVM switch
The problem is that Xorg on startup tries to ask the monitor settings passing through DCC. Some KVM switches don't have the capabilities to transmit correctly the DCC signal, so you have to specify noDCC in xorg.conf
The install seems to "hang" (It has taken more than 24 hours) at installing gutenprint-foomatic 5.0.1-5.fc8.x86_64 which is the foomatic printer database.
I disconnected the computer from the KVM switch, and connected it to a seperate screen, mouse and keyboard, but it didn't seem to make a difference.
At first, I wanted to have Fedora 8 for some experimental purposes but in the mean time it has no longer become necessary to do that experiment. I could also use Suse 10 for the application.
However, I'm not entirely convinced that the fault lies with the software.
Just for interest's sake, what would one do it you have half of an installation on the computer, i.e., if the power fails suddenly? Would the harddisk just be formatted if another OS is installed, or would it malfunction?
