Fedora 8 GL Desktop Effects disabled after reboot or logout

Hi to all,

I have Fedora 8 up and running on a dual boot system, and I have been trying to get the GL Desktop and Desktop effects running with some success but I have a couple of problems.

To get the effects working I have to first enable Desktop Effects from the System / Look and Feel menu, then enable the GL Desktop from the same menu. After doing this it mostly seems to work, but after a reboot or logout I will lose the Desktop Effects and windows are frozen to the desktop without a title bar or the ability to move the windows. I can re-enable the Desktop Effects from the System / Look and Feel menu and it all comes good again.

Is there something I missing to ensure the GL Desktop and Desktop Effects load correctly at login?

Thanks in advance for any help offered.

Fedora video card drivers for both ATI and the NVIDIA cards are available at this site; http://rpm.livna.org/rlowiki/ , just click the link for your Fedora version 8 to install the needed RPM then follow instructions.

Thanks but I already have the driver installed and working.

My problem is the GL Desktop and Desktop Effects settings don't stick, after a reboot they are lost or partial lost.

it would be helpful if we knew WHAT card you have and what driver
if nvidia was it the "nvidia.run" or the "kmod-nvidia"
for ati - did you install "kmod-fglrx " or the one from the ati web site , or the open driver in the fedora install dvd ?
see :"Howto for fglrx (Ati driver) and Compiz-fusion "
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/forum/...d.php?t=155503

have a read through the How to nvidia and generic
"compiz-fusion 0.7.9 repo for F8 , F9 & F10 ( includes screenlets & gnomeartng)"

http://forums.fedoraforum.org/forum/...d.php?t=173317
and the How to for a ati card
see :"Howto for fglrx (Ati driver) and Compiz-fusion "
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/forum/...d.php?t=155503
to install compiz-fusion and turn on "direct rendering"
If your 3d card ( ati or nvidia) dose not support it then you can not install it and have it work.

Thanks for the advice, it's all sorted.

I had to update the ATI driver, kmod-fglrx and delete my .gnome2 profile to get it all working but it's sorted out now.
