Unhappy Fedora 8 CPU Always At 100%

For some reason when I boot in gnome, my CPU spikes to 100% without even using a single application. when I go to the system monitor there is a proccess called "convert" that is using most of not all of my cpu resources. When I hover over the proccess it tells me "convert /tmp/gnome_thumbnail.8RHD4T.MCBD4T+ matte -thumbnail 128x128 png:/"
tmp/.gnome_thumbnail.8RJDT"

any idea how I could remedy the problem?

Can you kill the process? Try to do that. Then poke around the /tmp directory and see if you can find this offending gnome_thumbnail file and delete it.

My guess is that gnome is trying to make a thumbnail from a mal-formed png file and the convert process is hanging up on it.

Good Luck!

Thank You!

I killed the process and things seem to be fine for now. I was a bit hesitant to kill it. Do you know if there will be any negative repercussions for killing this particular process?

No, I do not think so. Gnome should respawn it when it is needed.

I am curious if it will survive a system restart. If it happens again, we will have to find the cause.

Fingers crossed...

I recently had to reformat, and in doing so it has resulted in this "convert" problem occurring again. This time I kill the process, however it respawns itself imidiatly making it impossible to do anything. Any suggestions?
